Dry Milk - 24 lbs/ person/ year
Dry Milk
Dry milk is a good addition to your food storage. It is not essential but will help to add nutrition. 24 pounds of dry milk will provide about one 8 ounce glass of milk per day. The following table shows the weight and gallons produced by 3 different types of dry milk.
| #10 Can | Pounds | Gallons |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Dry | 4 | 5 |
| Instant Dry | 3.75 | 4 |
| Morning Moo | 5 | 7 |
Other milk sources include evaporated and sweetened condensed canned milk. Dry milk will store 5-10 years in the absence of oxygen at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It is not recommended to store dry chocolate milk products. The chocolate flavoring can have fats or oils which will reduce the shelf life and quality of the milk product. It is recommended to store chocolate flavoring such as chocolate syrup or chocolate powdered mix if you desire chocolate milk.
Cheese
The USDA MyPyramid recommends to eat or drink the equivalent to three 8 ounce glasses of milk per day so you may also want to consider storing cheese. Cheese will store well in the refrigerator or freezer. Check the package label for the expiration date. Cheese will store well and past the expiration date for up to 6 months in the freezer. 1 1/2 ounces of hard cheeses, such as cheddar, is the equivalent to one 8 ounce glass of milk. There are also dehydrated cheese products. However, note that some dehydrated cheese products do not necessarily provide a good source of nutrition and are used more for flavor.
Supplements
Milk and milk products are a major source of calcium in the diet. If you do not have an adequate supply of dry milk and cheese, it is a good idea to store calcium supplements. Calcium citrate is the best quality supplement.
